NEW YORK – President Barack Obama announced his appointment of Jeffrey S. Crowley to head the Office of National AIDS Policy, the White House Office tasked with coordinating the continuing efforts of the government to reduce the number of HIV infections across the United States and coordinating care for those with the disease.
After a vacancy of several years during the Bush Administration, the Latino Commission on AIDS commends Mr. Crowley’s appointment and this major first step in President Obama’s campaign promise to craft a National AIDS Strategy.
“The Latino population is the youngest and fastest growing ethnic minority group in the U.S. and we continue to witness the devastating effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic across the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Knowing Mr. Crowley’s record of improving access to health and social services for people living with HIV/AIDS, people with physical and mental disabilities, low-income individuals, and other vulnerable populations, we look forward to working with him to ensure the inclusion of Hispanic/Latino AIDS Action Agenda priorities in a National HIV/AIDS Strategy,” stated Dennis deLeon, President of the Latino Commission on AIDS.
