Trinidad and Tobago Cuisine to be featured at the Ottawa Wine & Food Festival

Trinidad and Tobago Cuisine at Ottawa Wine and Food ShowPORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – The Tourism Development Company (TDC) in partnership with the T&T High Commission in Canada will exhibit the diverse cuisine of Trinidad and Tobago at the Ottawa Wine & Food Festival (OWFF) from October 30th to November 1st, 2015 at the Shaw Centre in Ottawa, Canada.

Trinidad-born twins and former Masterchef Canada competitors Marida and Narida Mohammed will prepare dishes inspired by Trinidad and Tobago’s fusion cuisine in a series of live cooking demonstrations sponsored by the TDC at the food festival.  The dishes will be paired with specialty cocktails using Angostura 1919 rum, the brand famous for its Bitters. The twins, owners of the catering business “Twice the Spice” in Toronto, and their delicious dishes will be featured on the “I’ll be Host for the Holidays” stage at 1:00pm on Friday, October 30th, 2015 and on Sunday November 1st, 2015. Both events are free with a day pass to OWFF.

At the Trinidad and Tobago booth, Angostura House will sample its multiple award-winning Angostura 1919 rum on its own as well as in a sorrel rum punch by Ottawa-born chef Resa Solomon St. Lewis, who also has roots in Trinidad and Tobago. Sorrel is a specialty drink made from the sepals of the sorrel (roselle or hibiscus) plant and is served at Christmas time in Trinidad and Tobago.

Tobagonian chef and author of “Taste of Tobago Blue Food”, and Baking and Pastry Arts lecturer, Sonia Malika Phillip will also be present at this year’s Festival.

Visitors to the Trinidad and Tobago booth are in for rhythmic treats courtesy the Mason Hall Folk Performers from Tobago and the Nepean Pan Harmonics, an Ottawa-based steel pan band. The steel pan is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago.

The Ottawa Wine & Food Festival, now in its 30th year, allows patrons to “taste their way around the world” with food and wine from around the world, complete with the opportunity to meet and learn from the makers and people behind them.
