Commentary with Winston Barnes: Bruce’s Chance

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Even as calls for Jamaica’s Prime Minister to resign continues, there is a need for any thinking Jamaican, or friend of Jamaica to think twice about that call. If one is prepared to be reasonable, this Prime Minister has the opportunity to do what no other Prime Minister in Jamaica’s history has done.

Some are convinced this Prime Minister can not win another election, even after the more than two years to the next are over. If that is the case and it is a reasonable argument, then the Prime Minister should use his time in office to clean up Jamaica. Not just Tivoli Gardens but all of Jamaican, and no not just the Garrisons.

The current Prime Minister could take this most critical opportunity, as he has almost nothing left to lose, and move into every cranny and crevice of Jamaica, strongholds of both major political parties, included, and remove the elements that corrupt both social and political life across the island, and do this with fear or favor to none.

And no one is suggesting this is going to be easy, but if one wants to rise about mere politician to that is statesman, then one has to understand and execute sacrifice. Despite his stupendous blunders, Bruce Golding has the best opportunity a Prime Minister has ever had to fix Jamaica.
