Two Weeks After Earthquake, Business Contributions to Haiti Surge Past $122 Million

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Just two weeks after an earthquake struck Haiti, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) reports that as of 3:30 p.m. EST today, corporate aid pledges have exceeded $122 million, including cash and in-kind contributions.

To date, 299 companies have contributed to relief efforts with 49 of these companies having donated $1 million or more, including Abbott, Bank of America, Baxter International, CitiGroup Inc., Comcast Corporation, FedEx Corporation, GlaxoSmithKline, Goldman Sachs, Google, JP Morgan Chase & Co., UPS, and Microsoft Corporation. According to BCLC data, this is the third-largest corporate response to a natural disaster.

“The magnitude of the Haitian tragedy has struck a profound chord with the business community,” said Stephen Jordan, senior vice president and executive director of BCLC. “Mobilizing more than $100 million in just 10 days and $122 million within 14 days is extraordinary. We have seldom seen such a massive response.”

“We are encouraged by the outpouring of corporate support, but this disaster response is far from over,” Jordan said. We continue to work closely with the international authorities and NGO community to identify the best ways the private sector can support their work.”
