Symposium on Caribbean and Latin American Immigrants in NYC
NEW YORK – The St. John’s University Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) will host a symposium on ‘Community dialogue among Caribbean & Latin American Immigrants in New York City’, on Saturday (April 19) at 12:30 p.m.
The luncheon event, which will be held at the Marillac Terrace A on the university’s Queen’s campus in New York, will see a distinguished panel of scholars and community leaders engaging in dialogue on the topic.
Acknowledging the fact that immigrants comprise a significant percentage of the New York City population, Dr. Alina Camacho-Gingerich of St. John’s University and chair of CLACS, informed that, “the objective (of the symposium) is to establish cross cultural bridges of communication and understanding among New York City’s immigrant groups from the Caribbean and Latin America”.
Dr. Camacho-Gingerich noted that “while these diverse groups of immigrants originate from countries with distinct historical, language and ethnic backgrounds, they share many common aspirations, challenges and opportunities as immigrants in New York City.”
The symposium is being supported by the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), and the Guyanese East Indian Civic Association (GEICA).
The event is part of a weeklong series of activities marking Immigrant Heritage Week from April 14-20, 2008 in New York City, designated by the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs.
