ST. LUCIA – St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King is looking forward to the Presidency of President-Elect Barack Obama, which will officially commences in January of 2009, when he is inaugurated.
The 47-year-old Senator from Illinois defeated Senator John McCain from Arizona to win the presidency in what has been termed a landslide.

The Prime Minister said, like millions worldwide, he too felt elated and proud to have seen the history making climax of the 2008 United States elections, which designated Mr. Obama the first black president of the United States of America and a symbol of great expectation to the world.
“It was a historic moment. It was one of great feeling; one of great emotion. I mean millions of people watched it. There’s great expectation through out the world, in the Caribbean and in Africa; in every continent in the world there is expectation. I think President–Elect Barack Obama himself understands the expectation of the world, and he understands the expectation of the American people by his call for coming together and working as a people, dealing with the many problems on the world,” said Prime Minister King.
Prime Minister King confirmed that he and other CARICOM colleagues are very optimistic that there will be a strengthening of CARICOM and US elections in time to come.
“I can only wait with great expectation, for the opportunity of engaging with the news president of the United States when he comes in office in January. The process began two years ago in meetings with the present president. There have been promises made. There been some movement, but with Obama coming in, we hope and we anticipate some greater traction, some greater activity and hopefully for the region to see some great benefit finally from the United States,” he said
An official congratulatory missive is being dispatched to the new President-Elect Barack Obama on behalf of the St. Lucia government and people of Saint Lucia via the Ministry of External Affairs.
