Service Commemorates Jamaica’s 54th Anniversary of Independence

Consulate General of Jamaica in Miami hosts Thanksgiving Service to commemorate Jamaica’s 54th Anniversary of Independence

SOUTH FLORIDA – In recognition of Jamaica’s 54th anniversary of Independence, the Consulate General of Jamaica in Miami will hold the annual Ecumenical Service of Thanksgiving on Sunday, July 31 at 4:00 p.m.

The Service will be held at the Cooper City Church of God, 9191 Stirling Road, Cooper City, FL 33324.

The official theme for this year’s celebration is titled “Let’s get together and fell alright”.  This year’s sermon will be delivered by the Reverend Dr. Richard Ledgister, Senior Pastor of the Sierra Norwood Calvary Baptist Church in Miami.  The officiating clergy will Pastor Dr. Clyde Bailey of the Cooper City Church of God.

As tradition, the Service will feature the Official message from the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Hon. Andrew Holness, MP, as well as several recitals from local performers including the Tallawah Mento Band, the Jamaica Folk Revue and the Sierra Norwood Youth Voice Ensemble and youth soloist Miss Melissa Lawrence.

Relating to this year’s official theme “Let’s get together and feel alright”, Consul General Franz Hall in his Independence Message spoke of the importance of unity and common purpose in the fight against slavery and securing independence.   He stated that “as a people, we are imbued with the vitality and wisdom of our ancestors, and recognizing that we inhabit a beautiful and bounteous country, we will continue to march hand-in-hand in support of the sustainable development of our beloved homeland, knowing that our collective efforts, whether at home or abroad, will redound to the benefit of generations to come.”

As he expressed Government’s appreciation to nationals and friends of the Jamaican Diaspora for their continued contributions and support to their homeland, the Consul General reiterated Government’s ongoing engagement with the Diaspora at all levels.
