Month-long event pays tribute to this Caribbean island’s rich and diverse heritage

Brades, Montserrat – Showcasing Montserrat’s culture, talent and creativity, the annual carnival and winter celebration known as Festival is currently in full-swing on the island. Highlighting the destination’s resilient and exuberant people, the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean is alive with music, revelry and a variety of festivities during the month-long event that runs from December 4, 2010 to January 1, 2011.

“Montserrat’s annual carnival celebration, Festival, is the highlight event of the year and a major attraction to travelers looking for a unique cultural experience,” said Ernestine Cassell, director of tourism. “With increased flight options from FlyMontserrat and full ferry service, vacationers will have the opportunity to visit our charming island, get a taste of culture and participate in carnival events.”

This year’s key events include: Punch & Get Out Soca Monarch, a concert featuring the island’s talented soca artists and “Nite of Pan,” where the musical styling of local musicians can be heard on the steel pan, on December 22; Miss Montserrat Festival Pageant on December 26; Street Jam, a lively street celebration filled with music, food and “good island vibes,” on December 28 and calypso finals, a musical showcase highlighting the island’s top entertainers, on December 30. The festival culminates with the New Year’s Day parade of troupes, vibrantly costumed revelers who perform traditional songs and dances.
