Miami City Commissioner heads to Haiti to deliver donated items

MIAMI – City of Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones will be traveling to Haiti on Friday, September 19, to deliver the donated food and items to those in Cabaret, Gonaives, Port-de-Paix/Latorture, Jacmel and Hinch, Haiti. The commissioner would like to take 50,000 pounds of food and water with her to deliver to the hurricane stricken Island.

In less than one month, Haiti has been affected by four storms, leaving many residents in dire need of food, water and emergency assistance. All four storms have resulted in the death of over 600 individuals and thousands of people without food, shelter and water.

The City of Miami and Dolphin Stadium joined forces with the Florida Marlins, Miami Dolphins and the Miami Hurricanes to collect food and clothing to aide hurricane victims in Haiti. The food and clothing drive entitled “Operation: Hope for Haiti” kicked off at the Miami Dolphins football game against the New York Jets and at all City of Miami Fire stations. The last day for residents to drop off donated items at City of Miami Fire stations is Friday, September 19, 2008.
