Commentary With Winston Barnes: Last Lap – General Elections 2016
SOUTH FLORIDA – In the language of long distance athletics, the general elections of 2016 could be said to have arrived at the last lap.
In about five days, the United States would have elected a new president to replace Barack Obama who has term limited out.
Recent public opinion polls show that Black voters have not turned out for early voting as they did for Obama, both in 2008 and 2012 general elections.
For some, that is a worrying trend, for others the hope is that Hispanic voters who have turned out in large numbers will make up for the Black voters who didn’t vote early.
There are some truly deep ironies involved in this development. Think if you would, about the fact that historically Black Americans have felt aggrieved that immigrants, including Hispanics have come here and taken their jobs. Would it not be even more ironic, that these immigrants end up saving the day for one party in next week’s election?
Some observers have also suggested that one of the candidates has not been able to fire up black voters like Obama did in 2008 and 2012 general elections.
Here’s the response to that.
In the history of the world we live in, there will never be another Barack Obama. One would hope that the Black voters who so embraced and continue to find favor in Barack Obama would appear to be more than enthusiastic to embrace the candidate he so strongly supports and campaigns for.
Or maybe they have been convinced that Black voters can’t get a good deal anyway, so they might as well vote for the candidate who has clearly indicated he does not like Black people.
