Daegu, Korea – Jamaica’s Yohan Blake is the new World 100m champion with a time of 9.80sec, Blake also set another record as the youngest to win the 100M at 21 years old.
Walter Dix, the double Olympic medallist from the United States, took silver in 10.08 and the man from St Kitts and Nevis taking the bronze in 10.09. Christophe Lemaitre, France’s European champion, was fourth in 10.19.
Blake who trains with Usain Bolt was devastated when Usain Bolt false-started and was disqualified from the race.
Grange Congratulates Blake; Commiserates with Bolt
Jamaica’s Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Olivia Grange, has congratulated Jamaica’s Yohan Blake on winning the men’s 100 metres at the IAAF World Championships in South Korea.
The Minister also expressed sympathy with Usain Bolt who was disqualified from the final for a false-start.
Minister Grange said: “On behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica, I congratulate Yohan Blake on his fine victory in the men’s 100 metres at the World Championships. He held his nerve after the disqualification of Usain Bolt to ensure that the title remains in Jamaica. The manner of his victory was superb – he not only won our country’s first medal at Daegu 2011 by running his season’s best time, but he became one of the youngest world champions ever; and we are very proud of his achievement.
“While I’m very happy for Yohan, I am also disappointed that Usain was disqualified. But I know our disappointment is nothing compared to what Usain must be feeling. I commiserate with him and assure him of the nation’s continued love and support.
“I must say a word of encouragement to Nesta Carter who appeared to be injured after competing in the final and hope that he will be fine.”
Yohan Blake won in a time of 9.92 seconds. Nesta Carter finished 7th in 10.95 seconds.
