Jamaica’s PM to leave Office on March 30th

KINGSTON – Prime Minister P.J. Patterson has announced that he will proceed on retirement on Thursday March 30th, the same day on which he will tender his resignation to Governor General Professor Sir Kenneth Hall. He said that in keeping with the desire for a seamless transition of leadership, Prime Minister In-Waiting the Hon. Portia Simpson Miller will be sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Jamaica on that same day.

Mr. Patterson made the disclosure on Monday March 13 during a post Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.

In her remarks, Minister Simpson Miller disclosed that the members of the new Cabinet which she will appoint will be sworn in on Friday March 31, the same day on which the Parliament will be prorogued. She disclosed further that the opening of the new legislative year, delivery of the Throne Speech by the Governor General and the tabling of the Estimates of Expenditure, will take place on April 12.
