NEW YORK – Jamaican educator Dr. Marcia Keizs, has been appointed to the newly created Commission on Higher Education for the State of New York.
The appointment was confirmed on Monday (June 4) by the Governor of the State of New York, Elliot Spitzer on the recommendation of New York State Senator, Malcolm Smith (D).
Dr. Keizs, who is President of York College of the City University of New York (CUNY), will join the 21-member Commission, which will review and analyze the academic standards and performance of New York’s colleges and universities.

The body will also make recommendations on how best to improve and broaden access to higher education in the state of New York for the more than one million students on more than 35 campuses.
A past student of Ardenne High School in Kingston, Dr. Keizs did graduate studies at the University of Manitoba, Canada and post graduate studies in education at Columbia University, New York and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
After working her way through the City University system, she was appointed President of York College in February 2005 and has since been credited with raising the school’s admission standards, strengthening its academic programmes and boosting the institution’s recruitment and retention ratio.
Senator Smith’s senatorial district is close to South Jamaica where York College is located.
