KINGSTON, Jamaica — The People’s National Party (PNP) has won the General Election, which was held on December 29.
Preliminary results have shown that the PNP, led by its President, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, won 41 seats, while the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), led by its Leader, former
Prime Minister, Hon. Andrew Holness, won 22 seats. In the 2007 general elections, the JLP won 32 seats, while the PNP won 28 seats.
In her victory speech at the PNP’s headquarters on Old Hope Road, Mrs. Simpson Miller thanked Jamaicans for her own mandate.
The PNP President said she would be forming partnerships with the private sector, civil society and the Diaspora to move the country forward.
She urged party supporters to embrace their JLP colleagues and not to display any animosity towards them. Mrs. Simpson Miller congratulated all the candidates who were successful at the polls.

Conceding victory, Mr. Holness said that, “the people have spoken and we their humble servants must listen to the voice of reason.”
The former Prime Minister said that he called Mrs. Simpson Miller to extend congratulations and to wish the new government well.
“I was privileged to have served, and I performed to the best of my ability,” Mr. Holness said.
This is the 16th General Election to be held in the country since Universal Adult Suffrage in 1944.
The Prime Minister won his West Central St. Andrew constituency, while Mrs. Simpson Miller, won her seat in South St. Andrew.
