Upgrading work at Sangster International Airport on track

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica – The first stage of Phase Two of the modernization and expansion project at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay is set for completion by March 2007, to coincide with the start of the ICC Cricket World Cup tournament.

The estimated cost of the project is US$200 million, with the current phase valued at approximately US$50 million.

Speaking at a JIS ‘Think Tank’ on Wednesday, July 12, Chief Technical Director in the Ministry of Information and Development, Dennis Morrison said “massive construction of the new customs and immigration areas as well as the ground transportation center is on track as Phase two of the project is well underway”.

It is expected that by March 2007 the airport will boast modern, spacious immigration and customs halls, with state-of-the-art equipment and a first world transportation center.

Mr. Morrison noted that apart from the immigration and customs halls, the ticketing concourse would be redone in a similar manner to the newly constructed section in the eastern concourse.

“The expansion is crucial as Jamaica prepares to create more modern and comfortable surroundings to meet future demands on the airport, with the continuous increase in hotel rooms and airline carriers,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, the major infrastructural work currently underway at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, is expected to cost US$130 million.

In Phase Two, improvements to be undertaken at the airport will include expansion of major roadways and public car parks; upgrading of the ticketing and departure concourse to a total of 550 square meters; reconfiguration of the customs hall exit to ensure more efficient passenger movement, and the creation of a cargo village to provide adequate space for cargo storage.
