Jamaica Cancer Society Tribute to Michael Pryce

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS) regrets the passing of radio and television journalist Michael Pryce on Monday, December 14, in the United Kingdom. Michael was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma Cancer in January 2006. His courageous battle with this very serious bone marrow disease for almost four years helped to put a face on this illness.

As one of our leading journalists, Michael drew public attention to cancer, which is one of the leading causes of death in Jamaica. His decision not to suffer in silence, helped dispel some of the fear which often surrounds cancer.

We commend Michael for his advocacy and selfless support of the work of the JCS, which were instrumental in encouraging others to become volunteers in the prevention and control of this disease. Indeed, his contribution to the annual Relay for Life event was evidence of his desire to serve the wider community.

We offer our condolences to the family and colleagues of this outstanding Jamaican broadcaster, who made one of his greatest contributions to the JCS and our country with the story of his own illness.

And, it is our hope that others will emulate Michael’s sterling efforts, as we continue the work of the JCS in fostering greater understanding of cancer and its treatment in the New Year.
