Kingston, Jamaica – With less than one week to go, preparations are in high gear for one of Downtown Kingston’s largest events, the third annual Digicel Foundation 5 K Run/Walk for Special Needs.
Scheduled to be held this Saturday, October 11th, the 5K team is pulling out all the stops to ensure a flawless experience for its participants. According to Special Needs Programme Manager for the Digicel Foundation, Judine Hunter, the Foundation alongside its partners, guarantee another great experience for the extraordinary Jamaicans who will light up the night for special needs.
She said, “We have been working assiduously to ensure that the race route is fully cleared. With that in mind, we will be executing mosquito fogging around our premises, along the race route and in the surrounding areas. Additionally, the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) has facilitated the clearing of trees along the route; while the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) is in the process of trimming the trees to allow for better lighting.” The NSWMA will also be washing the St William Grant Park (Parade) in the heart of downtown.
Hunter continued, “Over the last two years, we are proud to say that the Digicel Foundation 5K Run/Walk has been incident free. In ensuring that this year is no different, we are very happy to once again have the full support of the Kingston Central Police and the Guardsman Group, in addition to our personal security officials so that participants can feel at ease.”
Race time is at 7 p.m. and funds raised through this year’s event will be distributed through Digicel Foundation’s ‘Showcase Your SUPERabilities’ programme, which will provide needed scholarships to students with special needs.
Before the race, all roads leading to the race route will be closed to vehicular traffic between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 pm. Traffic travelling to or from the Normal Manley International Airport (NMIA) will be diverted by the police between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Ocean Boulevard will be closed to vehicular traffic between 7 p.m. on Friday, October 10 to 7 a.m. on Sunday, October 12th.
Registration is open until midnight on Tuesday, October 7th; persons can register for the 5k online at www.runningeventsja.com or via the Digicel Foundation 5K mobile app by downloading it from the Google play store.
