Commentary With Winston Barnes: Jamaica Football

SOUTH FLORIDA – Jamaica does enjoy a certain level of exceptionalism regardless of the outcome of the football game on Sunday (July 26) evening. Not because they are the first Caribbean country to make it to the finals of the Gold Cup, although that is of some significance.

It is not either because Jamaica has come back from the glory days of 1998 World Cup.

Instead it is an exceptionalism of athletic ability that is near impossible to match for a country its size and minimal resources.

For this team to have reached the final on Sunday is but another sign, that Jamaica is a sporting nation. In athletics, Usain Bolt has confirmed that he is still the champion coming back to make record runs of the hundred metre sprint. The women swim team scored gold, a discus thrower medaled at the Pan Am Games in Canada and on and on.

I am among those who share the notion that our footballer to not constitute a world football power. However, it simply cannot be denied that Jamaicans are playing world class football.

Oh, maybe the best achievement? It is that Jamaicans hold a special pride that makes world class players want to play for their home country, this little island in the Caribbean Sea. That is special.
