Commentary With Winston Barnes: Baby Deaths In Jamaica

SOUTH FLORIDA – The news from Jamaica is that over a four or so month period, eighteen babies died from a bacterial infection. The news further states that the Health Minister did not know about these baby deaths in two hospitals, one at each end of the island, for those four months. More news says the Minister was not informed.

Sounds ludicrous to me!

But it is worse; the Minister told a press conference last week that these were babies who were born with what appears to be major health problems from the get go.

None of the above offers any reason why someone, the minister, hospitals staff, regional health authority head, a doctor or a nurse or an orderly has not taken responsibility for these eighteen deaths. Not, i say, not blame, but responsibility for eighteen deaths in two of the major hospitals in the country.

I keep searching for an explanation outside of sheer sloppiness and mismanagement, fear of the Minister, nothing makes sense to me.

My fear is that much of the apparent disregard for life itself might just be connected with the fact that most if not all of these babies came from poor families who are without a voice, money or status, or all of the above.

I suspect that is not only against the law, I know it is also sinful and immoral.
