Bahamas and Russian Federation look to strengthen ties in Tourism and Culture

NASSAU, Bahamas – His Excellency Arthur Hanna, Governor General of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas welcomed the newly appointed Ambassador of the Russian Federation during a ceremony in the Drawing Room of Government House on Thursday, November 13.

The Governor General accepted Letters of Credence from His Excellency Mikhail Kamynin, accrediting him as Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, as well as Letters of Recall of his predecessor.

The Governor General welcomed the intention of the new leadership of Russia to increase cooperation with The Bahamas and the Caribbean.

“We look forward to further collaboration in our maritime affairs, to welcoming an increased amount of Russian visitors to our country and strengthening our friendship through cultural exchanges,” the Governor General said.

The Bahamas and the Russian Federation established diplomatic relations in January 2004. Since then, there has been a “significant” collaboration between both countries as it relates to The Bahamas’ candidacy to the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

The Governor General said he was confident that Ambassador Kamynin’s tenure would prove productive in further bilateral relations between both countries in the economic, commercial, scientific, educational and cultural areas.

“In this regards, please rest assured that you can depend on my office to assist you in every possible way. On behalf of the Government and the people of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, please convey best wishes for continued health, peace and prosperity to the president and people of the Russian Federation,” the Governor General told the Ambassador.

Ambassador Kamynin, 52, said he was honoured to have been appointed Ambassador to The Bahamas by newly-elected president Dmitry Medvedev.

“The impressive social and economic achievements of our country have successfully been converted into the growth of it influence on the global arena,” the Ambassador said.

“Our approaches shared by the majority of the States of the Developing world serve as a solid basis for mutually beneficial cooperation with the Caribbean and Latin American countries,” he said.

According to Ambassador Kamynin, the new leadership of Russia regards these countries as important and prospective partners in the common efforts to create new multilateral world, with the United Nations playing a key role in it, and meet the challenges of the Twenty-first Century as well as contribute to strengthening of international security and stability.

“Our relations with The Bahamas are characterised by friendship, mutual understanding and respect, by absence of conflicting issues. Similarity or identity of view on major topics of the international agenda create good basis for broadening of the political interaction between our two countries,” he said.

“I am strongly convinced that we should also actively seek ways to consolidate bilateral economic, commercial, scientific, educational and cultural ties,” Ambassador Kamynin said.

Ambassador Kamynin started his diplomatic career in 1978. He worked in the embassies of the USSR, now the Russian Federation in Mexico, Spain and Cuba. He is also Representative of the Russian Federation to the World Tourism Organisation. He is a Member of the Collegium of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Member of the Union of Journalists of the Russian Federation, author of several publications on international issues, decorated with Russian and International orders.

Ambassador Kamynin is married with two children; one son and a daughter.
