Applications Open For 2019 GraceKennedy Jamaican Birthright Internship

Application Deadline Extended To December 15th, 2018

KINGSTON, Jamaica Applications are now open for the 2019 GraceKennedy Jamaican Birthright Programme.

The month-long cultural immersion programme allows university students of Jamaican parentage from Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, to participate in a month-long all expenses paid internship in Jamaica.

During the internship, the students will be learning about the land of their parents’ or grandparents’ birth while working at a GraceKennedy subsidiary linked to their career interests.

Four persons – two from the United States of America, one from the United Kingdom and one from Canada – will be chosen to participate in the 2019 Jamaican Birthright Internship Programme to run from July 1 through to August 7, 2019.

To be eligible, applicants must be: between the ages of 18 and 25 years; second or third generation Jamaican; pursuing either an undergraduate or post-graduate degree; and have a Grade ‘B’ average or higher.  They must have a desire to learn more about their Jamaican heritage.

Persons who have lived in Jamaica for more than six months or more would not be eligible to participate.

Students are required to submit their applications by December 15, 2018.

“The 2018 Programme was a tremendous success and the interns had a life-changing and rewarding experience,” said Executive Director of the GraceKennedy Foundation, Caroline Mahfood, who directs the programme.

“With the support of our partners such as Caribbean Airlines, Go Jamaica Travel, Island Car Rentals, the Jamaica Tourist Board among many other government and private companies in Jamaica, the 2018 cohorts received the once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the business’ undertakings as well as Jamaica’s vibrant cultural traditions, from our food to music, history and so much more! They really got the chance to anchor their roots from the minute they boarded the flight,” Mrs Mahfood added.

2018 GraceKennedy Jamaican Birthright Interns

The 2018 Jamaican Birthright Interns were Anastacia Davis, a Masters student at Full Sail University (USA); Kayla Green, a 4th year student at Binghamton University (USA); Keean Nembhard, a 4th year student at Carleton University (Canada); and Joshua Tulloch, a 3rd year student at Oxford University in the UK.

  • According to Joshua Tulloch, “The Programme gave me an incredible insight into my familial past and has informed my future career decisions. To say it was life-changing would be an understatement!”
  • Anastacia Davis stated, “The GK Birthright Programme is by far the most progressive and transformative experience for children of the Jamaican Diaspora. The six weeks I spent in the land of my father has revealed the innermost beliefs and treasures that lie on the land of wood and water.”
  • Keean Nembhard, from Canada shared, “It was certainly the most impactful internship of my entire life. I was capable of developing a strong professional network and connecting with Jamaica’s vibrant culture, all the while working for an incredible company.”
