WASHINGTON, DC – The following is a statement by the American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad:

The American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad & Tobago would like to extend congratulations to the Prime Minister elect Dr. the Honourable Keith Rowley and the People’s National Movement on their success in the 2015 General Elections.

This has been a keenly contested elections in which supporters of both parties have had the opportunity to demonstrate their support for the parties and candidates of their choosing. Now that the election has been completed and the votes tallied, we urge all citizens and interest groups to put aside partisanship and work only toward the national interest. We are heartened that Dr. Rowley recognized the need for such an approach in his acceptance speech and congratulate him on his message of inclusion and national cohesion.

In this climate of economic uncertainty, we are also pleased that the Prime Minister-elect has signaled his Government’s intention to urgently confront the many pressing economic issues which need urgent attention, as we seek to ensure growth and resilience of the country’s economy. We look forward to working with the new Government as we have with all previous governments.

We also look forward to the appointment of Ministers and to sharing our already documented views on the next national budget. AMCHAM T&T emphasizes the need for continued open and frequent consultation and collaboration between the public and private sectors as we collectively seek to find solutions which will promote good governance, social cohesion and economic prosperity for all citizens.

We also take this opportunity to acknowledge the work and contribution of the outgoing Prime Minister, the Honourable Kamla Persad Bissessar and her Government and are grateful for the opportunities that they afforded us to engage on national issues.

As the Pathway to the Americas, we recognise the potentially pivotal economic role that Trinidad & Tobago can play within the Western Hemisphere. In this regard, we will continue to work with the Government and our hemispheric partners towards making this country a hub for trade and investment.

We would also like to commend the people of Trinidad & Tobago for once again having an elections which was free of major violence or incident. The Elections and Boundaries Commission must also be commended for the manner in which they conducted the election. We believe that this is testament of the high regard for the democratic process among our citizenry and demonstrates the continuing maturity of our relatively young nation.
