16th Annual Miami-Dade County Department of Human Services (DHS) Black Family Symposium
16th Annual Miami-Dade County Department of Human Services (DHS) Black Family Symposium, “UNDERSTANDING ETHNIC AND CULTURAL BARRIERS TO SERVING THE BLACK FAMILY”
MIAMI – On February 17th 2006 from 8am to 4pm the Miami-Dade County Department of Human Services will host its 16th Annual Black Family Symposium co-sponsored by GIBRALTAR Bank at the Hilton Miami Airport 5101 Blue Lagoon Drive, Miami, Florida.
Every year for the past several years the Department has held a Black Family Symposium with speakers on topics of interest to both families receiving services and staff involved in the delivery of these services.
Each symposium/workshop focuses on a myriad of issues that impact our families in today’s society, such as healthcare, education, economics/finance, and domestic violence. These are significant factors in the South Florida community. Speakers ranging from community leaders to elected officials to experts in their fields have been invited to expound on these issues and offer strategies for solutions.
This year, the committee felt the focus needed to be expanded beyond the Black Family. The symposium will be inclusive of all the ethnic populations of color in our community that are in need of services. Also, we as human service professionals need to take more of a leadership role in helping to sustain these families. Our theme, “Understanding Ethnic and Cultural Barriers to Serving the Black Family,” evolved from this new focus evolved.
Concurrent workshops will address the following Topics:
Economics/Finance
Healthcare
Domestic Violence
Education
The symposium registration fee is $40.00 in advance or $45.00 at the door. Fulltime students with student I.D. pay $20.00. Continuing education credits (CEU’s) will be provided by Psychologists, Clinical Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Mental Health Counselors ($5.00 processing fee for CEU’s). Lunch is included in fee.
