Western Union Foundation, GraceKennedy donate $50,000 to Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Western Union Foundation and Western Union Agent GraceKennedy, announced today a joint donation of US$50,000 to United Way of Jamaica to assist in disaster relief efforts here in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Gustav.

Several schools were severely damaged by the storm delaying the start of the new school year, and this donation will help United Way of Jamaica refurbish schools for students affected throughout the Island.

“As a Caribbean company whose roots are entrenched in Jamaica, it is important for us to give back to our community in this time of need,” said Joan-Marie Powell, managing director of GraceKennedy Remittance Services.

“GraceKennedy and Western Union have always been there for the people of Jamaica, and this is just one more example of our strong partnership and commitment to social responsibility in our country.”

This joint donation was made possible through the Western Union Foundation’s Agent Giving Circle Program, which matches Western Union Agent donations dollar for dollar.
“We are very proud of the commitment of our Agents who continue stepping up to help our communities throughout the world,” said Luella Chavez D’Angelo, president of the Western Union Foundation.

Western Union’s Our World, Our Family program, together with the donations of Western Union Agents, has recently provided relief donations in Belize, Haiti and Jamaica totaling US$175,000.

Our World, Our Family, is a five-year initiative to empower migrant families through education and global economic opportunity programs that help them stay connected, overcome barriers, and realize their dreams.
