UWI to observe World Food Day with a candle light vigil

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – The University of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine will observe World Food Day with a Candle Light Vigil on Tuesday, October 21, 2008, themed ‘World Food Security: The Challenges of Climate Change and Bio-energy’.

The vigil will begin from 5:45 p.m. at the Old Administration Building, UWI St Augustine Campus. Professor Clement Sankat, newly installed Campus Principal, will be the feature speaker at this event. This event is free and open to the public.

The Candlelight Vigil is promoted by The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and will involve governments, as well as national committees dedicated to the fight against hunger. The venue, the Old Administration Building, is appropriate for the commemoration of World Food Day, as it was the former Administrative Centre of the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture (ICTA).

Other speakers at the event include Professor Dyer Narinesingh, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Agriculture; Mr. Winston Rudder of the Cropper Foundation; Mrs. Danoo Sookoo, President of the Agricultural Society of Trinidad and Tobago and Mrs. Florita Kentish, (FAO) Representative on behalf of the UN.
