PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Dr. Winston G. Lewis, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at The University of the West Indies (UWI), has been awarded the International Order of Merit by the World Congress of Arts, Sciences and Communications.
The UWI Engineer received the World Congress gold medal and citation at the 2008 World Forum of Arts, Sciences and Communications, an annual gathering of leading professionals which this year took place in St Catherine’s College, Oxford University, England from August 26th to 31st.
The award, conferred in honour of Dr. Lewis’ Extraordinary Distinction of Meritorious Achievement in Innovative Leadership and Service to the Caribbean people, comes on the heels of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Leadership, Service to the Engineering Profession and Country, and Outstanding Academic Achievements in Teaching and Research, which the World Congress granted to Dr. Lewis earlier this year. Dr. Lewis has also agreed to be an Ambassador of the World Congress of Arts, Sciences and Communications.
Dr. Winston G. Lewis
A former president of the Association of Professional Engineers of Trinidad & Tobago (2003- 2004), and member of the Government-appointed Steering Committee which established the University of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Lewis has also served on several committees with organisations such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), The Trinidad & Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS), Metal Industries Company (MIC), Trinidad & Tobago Institute of Technology (TTIT), University of Trinidad & Tobago and the Association of Professional Engineers of Trinidad & Tobago (APETT). He is a Fellow of APETT and a member of the Order of International Fellows, Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) and ASME.
In recognition of his numerous contributions to the advancement of teaching and learning, Dr. Lewis was awarded the UWI/Guardian Life of the Caribbean Premium Teaching Award in 2004.
His research and developmental work were recently highlighted in 60 Under 60, a special 60th Anniversary commemorative edition of UWI’s Pelican magazine.
