MIAMI – Dr. Brian Meeks, Professor of Social and Political Change at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, will be among panelists at the 25th annual Miami International Book Festival forum “Journalism in the Caribbean.”
The panel discussion to be held on Saturday (Nov. 15) at 12 noon, is part of the activities highlighting the one-week literary festival and market which began on yesterday (Nov. 10) at the Miami Dade College Campus in downtown Miami.
Nearly 400 authors, editors, publishers and literary agents from around the world are expected to participate at the book festival which has grown to attract some 10,000 visitors.
Fairgoers visiting the International Pavilion, will see exhibits of fine arts, folkloric traditions and literature of the many nations participating.
A professor of Social and Political Change and Director of the Center for Caribbean Studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Dr. Meeks has written extensively on Caribbean politics and political theory.
He has also completed visiting appointments several universities throughout the USA including the Florida International University in Miami, Stanford University in California, Cambridge University in Massachusetts and Michigan State University. He has also participated in focus groups at Barry University.
Dr. Meeks has worked with the media in Grenada and Jamaica.
Other panelists appearing at the media forum will include journalist, Cynthia Barrow Cyles who also lectures in Political Science at the University of the West Indies, Trinidad journalist Andrew Johnson and Assistant Professor Selwyn Ryan, who lectures in journalism at York University in Toronto.
St. Lucian born, Nobel Laureate, Derek Walcott will also be among the Caribbean authors scheduled to appear at the Caribbean Voices section of the one-week book Fair on Saturday (Nov. 15).
