Trinidad Government extends condolences on passing of Professor Julian Kenny

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Trinidad and Tobago’s Government has express condolences to the family of Professor Dr. Julian Kenny who died on Tuesday afternoon.The environmentalist and former Chairman of the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) was 81.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Tuesday hailed the late Professor Kenny as someone who distinguished himself as a scientist and who was highly-recommended to many national committees with his advocacy of environmental issues.

She said he made his mark documenting the natural history of Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean and was best known for his work in zoogeography and his knowledge of the natural history of the Caribbean. She said he was seen as a luminary in his field, with his work extending to the development of research students at UWI, developing ecological profiles of the Tamana Caves, the Caroni Swamp and the Aripo Savannahs.

She described Kenny as one of the country’s foremost resources in the documentation and protection of our wildlife.

Housing and the Environment Minister Dr.Roodal Moonilal told the Express newspaper he was “shocked” to learn of the passing of the former Senator.

The Minister extended condolences to Kenny’s family noting, “he has left an indelible mark on our social and environmental landscape. He will be missed. His work and advice will continue to inspire and guide us.”
