Thousands ready to Celebrate Jamaica’s Independence and Olympic Gold at Miramar Regional Park

MIRAMAR – South Florida’s celebration of Jamaica’s 50th independence anniversary will climax at the staging of the annual Jamaica Independence & Cultural Celebration (JICC), scheduled for Sunday, August 5 from noon. to 10:00 p.m. at Miramar Regional Park, 16801 Miramar Parkway.

Thousands are anticipated to attend the event which promises exciting entertainment, interactive activities and a variety of delicious Jamaican food, guaranteed to deliver amusement for the entire family.

The event has been designated as an “Official Celebratory Event” and “Global Site” by the Jamaica 50 Secretariat and will capture live activities in Jamaica, London & Canada which will be televised on a giant screen in the park.

Presented by telecommunications giant LIME, the celebrations also coincides with the running of the men’s 100 meters at the London Olympics where Jamaica’s Usain Bolt will defend his title as the “World’s Fastest Man”. As in past years, patrons are encouraged to “wear yuh colours” – the Jamaican national colors of Black, Gold and Green, to demonstrate their patriotic pride.

Adults and kids alike can participate in the day’s activities – Mento and Ska Dance contests, traditional games such as marbles, jacks, dandy shandy and hop-scotch will be sure to bring back memories. The more active can participate in the hoola-hoop contest, sack race and egg & spoon race for prizes.

Headlining the entertainment package on stage is the notable Fab 5, Jamaica’s most popular live band who have been topping charts and receiving international recognition for more than 40 years. Sharing the stage with Fab 5 will be Wayne Wade, Twiggy, Mical Rustle, Latty Gouzang, Audley Rollen, Amblique, and many more.

Jamaica’s Independence & Cultural Celebration will be hosted by veteran radio personality Jamusa of WAVS 1170 Radio, and is produced by NRS, Inc. and Riddims Marketing in association with United Friends of Highgate. Sponsors include Western Union, Jamaica National Building Society, WAVS Radio, The National Weekly, Vita Malt, Jamaica National Money Transfer, The Victoria Mutual Building Society, Bigga Sodas and Grace Foods.

Admission is $5 in advance and $12 at the gate, tickets are on sale at selected Caribbean outlets in Miami-Dade and Broward.
