MIAMI – The Nat Moore Foundation announced its 2012 cohort of scholarship award recipients. The fifteen scholarship recipients and honorable mentions will receive four-year scholarships and gifts totaling $54,000.
The scholarships will assist students, who are graduating from schools across Broward and Miami Dade Counties, in paying for expenses associated with their higher education, including tuition and fees, room and board, books and equipment, and other related costs.
“The Foundation’s scholarship programs honor students who have not only excelled academically, but those who have participated in multiple school activities, yet find the time to give back to their communities through volunteer services,” said Nat Moore, former Miami Dolphins wide receiver and founder of The Nat Moore Foundation. “They are an amazing group of smart and community-minded young people.”
“We received more applications than ever this year, indicating the strong need for scholarship assistance,” said Bob Pechon, President of The Nat Moore Foundation and Chair of the Scholarship Committee. “All the students were outstanding, and we had much difficulty selecting the winners.”
The Foundation awarded two students each with a four-year, $10,000 award ($2,500 per year for four years) made possible by the Donald J. Trump Foundation, Inc. and Wells Fargo Foundation, and eight students each with a four-year, $4,000 award ($1,000 per year for four years) made possible by the NFL Charities, Inc., among other funders. In addition, five students will each receive their choice of an Apple iPad or a Toshiba Satellite laptop computer.
“I appreciate The Nat Moore Foundation’s investment in me,” said Yadam Conde, who was named the Foundation’s first annual Wendell R. Beard Scholar in honor of Beard’s dedication to academic excellence and community service. Yadam attended Mater Academy Charter High School in Hialeah, graduated in the top four percent of his class, and provided more than 600 hours of community service. “The scholarship shows that Nat Moore and the Scholarship Committee are confident in my success, which will encourage me to work harder at John Hopkins University so I can earn the ability to support my family and my community.”
The other award recipients include Laura Munoz (Charles W. Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines), Alesha Foster (Nova High School in Davie), David Green (Booker T. Washington Senior High School in Miami), Tina Malcolm (Miami Edison Senior High School), Alexandra Peterson (Western High School in Davie), Gerry Rivadeneira Cruz (G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School in Miami), Ashton Steele (Dr. Michael Krop Senior High School in Miami), Jameesha Toomer (Miami Norland Senior High School) and Viviane Valdes (South Dade Senior High School in Homestead). Kaina Bellegarde and Khambrell Dawkins (William H. Turner Technical Arts High School in North Miami Beach), Michael Conway (Western High School in Davie), Darius Fair (Pompano Beach High School in Pompano Beach) and Njideka Ofoleta (Coral Reef Senior High School in Miami) will each receive an iPad or laptop.
