THE AFRO-CUBAN TAIKO PROJECT COMES TO MIAMI

Miami – In anticipation of their 4th Annual “Bridging Cultural Gaps” African Diaspora Dance & Drum Festival of Florida – Delou Africa Inc. presents the Afro Cuban Taiko Project. The Afro-Cuban Taiko project is a extracurricular music group composed of middle and high school students from Marinette, Wisconsin.

The group plays music from Africa, Cuba, the Caribbean and Japan and is under the direction of middle school music teacher Paul Okray, who has been making instruments used by the group for the past 6 years.

While in Miami – they will do a mini-residency at the Little Haiti Culture Center offering a free youth/teen workshop series to the students of the Camp Discovery Summer Camp and offer a free community concert.

This event will serve as a kickoff activity promoting Delou Africa’s 4th annual festival to be held August 2-4th , 2013 at the Little Haiti Culture Center.

This years festival will contain expanded children’s programming and will also feature music from the same regions that the Afro-Cuban Taiko project represents. Visit: http://adddff.delouafrica.org/ for 2013 festival information.

“We invite children and families from the community to explore rhythms and music from Japan, Cuba and West Africa by attending this free concert. The concert will also contain local guest artists from Cuba, Brazil and Guinea.” States Delou member and volunteer Derron Linyear, who is coordinating the event.
