Susan L. Taylor is the editor-in-chief of ESSENCE magazine. She travels across the globe to address conferences for African American women and to speak on the state of black America. Before becoming ESSENCE’S fashion and beauty editor in 1971, Taylor was the founder of her own company, Nequai Cosmetics. Her rise to the top at ESSENCE took about ten years. While friends moved from one magazine to another, Taylor stayed committed to ESSENCE. She states, “There were some moments of self-doubt, but the bottom line was that I was still challenging myself.” And the waiting surely paid off. She has been with ESSENCE magazine for 37 years now, and was honored just this past December 2nd, 2008 at a banquet in New York.

Guests to this celebration included Oprah Winfrey, Sean Combs, Michael Eric Dyson, and Terry McMillan. Proceeds from this event were donated to the CARES Mentoring Movement which was founded by Taylor.

Taylor frequently stresses the need for positive and empowering thought, for spirit and faith, among black women throughout America in the ongoing personal and collective struggle against racism.

Tickets are available at City Hall, 3800 Inverrary Blvd., Lauderhill 33319, Suite #107, for $50 per person (includes dinner – cash bar available). Space is limited, so purchase your tickets soon and remember, evening attire is requested for the night’s event.
