Supermodel Petra Nemcova and Haiti Ambassador-at-large awarded World Tourism Humanitarian Award

London, UK (HCNN) – Supermodel and Ambassador- at-Large for Haiti, Petra Nemcova was awarded the World Tourism Humanitarian Award on Monday in London at the opening of the World Travel Market.

The world-renowned top model and founder of Happy Hearts Fund (HHF) received the award for her philanthropic efforts with HHF which has  rebuilt 100 safe-resilient schools in areas affected by natural disasters which impacts more than 46,000 children and 490,000 community members in nine countries around the world.

The recipients of the award, which included the Earthwatch Institute, Google glass, Singita – Place of Miracles and Petra Nemcova were recognized for their “their commitment to conservation, sustainable tourism development, creating unique initiatives to bring the travel experience to people with special needs as well as assisting local communities in overcoming challenging times.”

Petra Nemcova founded the Happy Hearts Fund following her own experience during the 2004 Asian tsunami where she lost her then partner, broke her pelvis and was rescued where she sought refuge in a tree. She founded the organization the following year, in 2005.

She began work in Haiti in 2007 building schools in Cite-Soleil and continued her work following the 2010 earthquake. She later publicly announced her relationship with current Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe.

She has since moved to Haiti full time and continues as the President of Happy Hearts Fund.
