KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Government of Jamaica is deeply saddened by the news of the passing earlier this morning, November 14 of the outstanding Jamaican statesman and lawyer, the Honourable David Coore OJ, QC.
Hon. David Coore’s unwavering dedication to public service and national development spanned over forty years. He formally entered public life in 1959 as a Member of the Legislative Council and is recognised for his sterling contribution in the drafting of the Constitution of Jamaica.
Mr. Coore served as Member of Parliament in St. Andrew West Central from 1967 to 1976 and in St. Andrew West from 1976 to 1978 representing the People’s National Party. He served as Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance and Planning during the period 1972 to 1978. He also served as Representative and Chief of Mission as well as in other capacities at the Inter-American Development Bank from 1978 through to the mid 1980’s. In 1989 Mr. Coore was appointed Senator and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and performed in this capacity until 1993 and thereafter as Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs between 1993 and 1995. As an eminent lawyer the Hon. David Coore is remembered for his brilliant legal mind and sound advice which he willingly rendered particularly in the areas of constitutional law and foreign policy.
