South Florida Community Hospital caters to its Caribbean community with new program

MIAMI — In its effort to meet the community needs, North Shore Medical Center has started a new series of Childbirth Education classes that are taught in Creole. The new program has been developed to meet the health needs of women who are part of the growing Caribbean community in Miami-Dade County.

The hospital now offers Childbirth Education classes held in English, Spanish, and Creole. The free Prepared Childbirth Class series is designed for first time parents in their second trimester of pregnancy. Topics of the classes include anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, stages of labor, comfort techniques of labor, Caesarean birth, and breast feeding. A tour of the hospital’s Labor and Delivery Department is also included to help expectant mothers become more comfortable with childbirth and their environment. The classes are free to the community, and the only things expecting parents need to bring to class are two pillows and a blanket or a mat.

“It’s a priority of North Shore Medical Center to meet the needs of its local community,” said Manny Linares, Chief Executive Officer of North Shore Medical Center. “Our Childbirth Education program has grown dramatically, and we are proud to offer this important health education service to a culturally and ethnically diverse group of expecting parents during a very exciting time in their lives.”

The Childbirth Classes are held in the auditorium off the hospital’s main lobby entrance. To register for class, please call 1-800-984-3434. Expecting parents can also register for the classes online through the North Shore Medical Center community calendar on the hospital’s website: www.northshoremedical.com.
