Washington, DC – Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson-Smith says she will be taking steps to reach out and engage Jamaican youths within the Diaspora. “It is critical that we bridge the generational divide and create a new avenue where young people can make their contribution on matters that are import to them”, she said.
Addressing a reception held in her honor at the Embassy of Jamaica in Washington DC, Senator Johnson-Smith said that she will focus on facilitating greater input by the young people in the decision-making process and that her ministry was working on an appropriate platform to allow for their full participation.
“I have started a conversation with the young leaders by having encounters in each Diaspora location I have visited”. These include New York, Orlando and Toronto, Canada and I have plans to visit other locations which will give me the opportunity to engage with our young people”, she said.
Minister Johnson-Smith used the opportunity to reiterate the government’s commitment to engage with and involve the Diaspora.
The Foreign Affairs Minister also updated the gathering on various government initiatives since assuming office seven months ago. These include achieving national prosperity while maintaining fiscal prudence, the establishment of a new ministry of economic growth and job creation.
