Sandy Daley’s Book, Whose Vagina Is It, Really? Debuts as Stage Play

By Howard Campbell

TORONTOWhose Vagina Is It, Really?, Jamaican writer Sandy Daley’s sensational play, finds its biggest audience to date when it shows at the Hamilton Fringe Festival in July. It is based on her 2010 book of the same name.

The play, which opened last year, was picked up after Daley won the Hamilton Fringe Festival Lottery in December. Produced by her Chocolate Dollz Productions, ‘Whose Vagina’ will be shown seven times at the July 6-17 event which consistently attracts over 20,000 people.

Daley also stars in the play which is described as a “satirical comedy” about “a single woman’s struggle to find her Mr Right, while truly discovering herself”.

The evolution from book to theater has surprised even the confident Daley whose acting credits also include the short film, Daddy’s Not Around: D N A and the teen series, The Wright Girl.

“This all began with an article that I wrote for the Street Hype Newspaper years ago. The article was then followed-up by a book of the same name and now a play. We are also working on this to be a television series in the near future. The possibilities are endless!,” she said.

It will be Daley’s first appearance at the Hamilton Fringe Festival. Last year, Whose Vagina played at the Toronto Fringe Festival. Another of her plays, Chronicles of A Black Woman, showed at that event in 2021.

Daley, who is in her early 50s, was born in Kingston. She has lived in Canada since age 15 and established herself as a journalist in Toronto.

A brash call from an ex-lover inspired her to write Whose Vagina Is it, Really? Which has won several accolades in Canada.

“Men leave (a relationship) and still think they have some form of control over a woman, especially that part of their body,” she said shortly after the book’s release.

Whose Vagina Is It, Really? will also be shown at the San Diego International Fringe Festival in May.
