Saint Lucian Police will soon receive CCTV’s

ST. LUCIA – Saint Lucian police will soon have the added benefits of Closed Circuit Television or CCTV cameras which will be situated around the island to enhance law enforcement’s capacity to monitor, track and intersect criminal acts in and around the country’s borders.

The Parliament has approved US$3 million for the set up of the CCTV cameras which is a critical component of government’s National Crime Fighting Plan.

Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King says the gadgets will be set up at strategic locations around the island.

“Soon we will be introducing the CCTV cameras in the north of the island as a first phase from Castries to Gros-Islet at strategic locations to be able to monitor criminal activities and to further equip the police with the added advantage of being able to track down criminals, then we will move to introduce the CCTV cameras in the south-east and west regions of the country to ensure that our citizens and visitors alike can feel comfortable and safe knowing that once anyone engages in criminal activity we have the capacity within the police force to deal with it.”

CCTV cameras have been tried and tested in various overseas jurisdictions like the US and UK, resulting in significant gains in curbing crime and illegal activities.

Prime Minister King says the technology will assist local police in some of their daily encounters.

“Recently there was an incident right here in Saint Lucia where the vehicle of a prominent citizen was stolen and within 24 hours stripped of all its parts and dumped in a particular location. With the advent of the CCTV cameras, our police will have the added ability to be able to locate, track and investigate crimes successfully in order to bring to justice those people who engage in criminal activity.”

A number of locations in and around Saint Lucia’s coastal borders are already under surveillance as a result of a successful partnership with authorities in Trinidad and Tobago.

The additional installation of the CCTV technology is expected to aid in sustaining the present gains in the fight against crime and lawlessness in the country.
