Representative Hazelle Rogers expresses sorrow over suicide of Tamarac resident

LAUDERHILL – Representative Hazelle Rogers, one of South Florida’s Caribbean American elected officials is deeply saddened by the death of Heather Newman, a 28-year-old woman in Tamarac, who, authorities say, recently committed suicide after becoming distraught over her economic circumstances.

Representative Rogers issued the following statement:

“I am truly saddened by the tragic death of Heather Newman, a young woman who became overburdened by her personal financial situation. The economic crisis is deeply affecting our community in many ways.

“Ms. Newman’s death highlights the importance and the urgency that public agencies work in earnest toward helping homeowners and renters who are struggling to overcome home foreclosures, job losses and other economic turmoil.

“Economic stimulus must touch everyone and we need to ensure that landlords and the legal system take into consideration mental health issues associated with financial stress.

“This tragic death reminds us all that all of our constituents, but especially those who rent their homes, urgently need meaningful assistance in order for our state and nation to grow economically.”
