Outstanding Jamaicans to receive National Honors Monday

Kingston, Jamaica – (JIS)- Some 157 outstanding Jamaicans who have contributed to nation building will be officially recognized at the National Honours and Awards ceremony on National Heroes Day, (October 17) on the lawns of King’s House, beginning at 9am.

The awards will be presented in various categories including the Order of Jamaica; Order of Distinction (in the rank of Commander [CD] and Officer [OD]); the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service; and the Badges of Honour for Meritorious and Long and Faithful Service.

Michael Fennell will be one of four persons receiving the Order of Jamaica (OJ) for outstanding contribution in the areas of Religion, Ophthalmology, Art and Sports. Mr. Fennell is recognized for his years of service in the field of sports.

Another 22 persons will be conferred with the Order of Distinction, in the rank of Commander while 47 persons will receive the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer. Among the latter class is Kingsley ‘Ibo’ Cooper who will be awarded for his contribution to the development of Jamaican music. The Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service will be conferred on 12 recipients for their contribution to Community Service and Development, Education, Nursing, Mental Health Care and Public Service.

Twelve other Jamaicans will receive the Badge of Honour for Long and Faithful Service. Meanwhile, 60 members of the uniformed service will receive the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service. This will include four Officers from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), 32 from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), three from the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF), six from the Department of Correctional Service (DCS) and 15 from the Jamaica Fire Brigade.
