The Kiwanis Club of Lauderdale Lakes donated $32,000 to nine worthy charities at a special meeting of club members on Tuesday, March 15. The event was held at the Lauderdale Lakes Community Council, in Lauderdale Lakes with over 75 people in attendance.

The organizations receiving funds were, Best Buddies Florida, Caribbean Heart Menders’ Association, Friends of Good Shepherd Mobay, Horses and the Handicapped of South Florida, Neighbor to Family, Kiwanis Club of Montego Bay Freeport, SOS Children’s Village of Florida, Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center; and the Club’s Scholarship Fund. Representatives from all of the organizations were on hand to receive their donations and thanked the Kiwanis Club members for their contributions.

The money given to these organizations was raised from the annual Charity Ball which is a premier undertaking of the Kiwanis Club. Since 1999 the Kiwanis Club has distributed over $210,000 to various charities including Air Jamaica’s Lovebird Kids, African-American Research Library, Caribbean Heart Menders’ Association, SOS Children’s Village and the Susan B. Anthony Home & Recovery Center.

Kiwanis immediate Past President Barrington Russell remarked that, “This is yet another way that the Lauderdale Lakes/West Sunrise Kiwanis club is doing good works in the community.”

Eric Cyrus, another past president of the Kiwanis Club, said they will be creating an endowment fund in an effort to raise more money for donation to the Club’s Scholarship Fund and several other organizations.

The Kiwanis Club of Lauderdale Lakes/West Sunrise, founded in 1998, was the brainchild of Anthony D’Oyley, 2001-2002 Distinguished President, and Leroy Gordon, Distinguished President of the Kiwanis Club of Eastern Kingston & Port Royal, Jamaica.
