WASHINGTON, DC – The Ambassador of Jamaica to the Organization of American States (OAS), Audrey Patrice Marks, today presented her credentials to OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza to become her country’s Permanent Representative to the inter-American organization.
During the ceremony, which took place at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, the new representative of the government of Prime Minister Bruce Golding reiterated her country’s commitment to the principles and objectives of the OAS and expressed her admiration for the work of the organization in the fields of peace, security and prosperity in the hemisphere.
“We are committed to an active and constructive dialogue and to the priorities of the Organization,” said Ambassador Marks, adding that “we look forward to contribute to the debates in the General Assembly that will soon be held in Lima, Peru.”
In her presentation to the Secretary General, OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin and other OAS Member State representatives, the representative of the Caribbean country stated that “we will continue with our country’s longstanding tradition of working with you very hard to advance the hemispheric agenda.”
On his behalf, Secretary General Insulza welcomed the new representative, recalling that Jamaica was one of the countries of the Caribbean region to join the OAS in 1969. “Since then, that country has had a very active and productive activity in this organization,” he observed, making reference to the programs and initiatives that Jamaica has supported, principally those relating to the activities aimed at strengthening the electoral processes. “We have had a very good cooperation policy, for example, on issues of electoral finance, that has opened new ground in the region for that kind of program,” said the Secretary General.
Before her appointment to the OAS, Ambassador Marks held an executive position in her country’s private sector, a characteristic that the Secretary General highlighted as “important to gain a new perspective on the private-public relation and development of the region.”
