National Association of Jamaican and Supportive Organizations (NAJASO) will continue to support Jamaica

NEW YORK – President of the National Association of Jamaican and Supportive Organizations (NAJASO), Kathy Harrison-Tomlinson, has said that the group would continue to play its part in helping to build the country.

In a message to delegates attending a meeting of the Eastern Region of the United States (US) at the Jamaican Consulate in Manhattan, on December 2, the President said that NAJASO was alive and well and was continuing on the path of recruiting community based organizations and “bring them under the umbrella”.

Mrs. Harrison-Tomlinson said that there was renewed interest in getting back to the core mission of the organization as envisioned by the founders in l977.

“The founders of this noble organization knew that the only way that we could achieve our goal of building a new Jamaica is when the Jamaican organizations in the Diaspora come together and be that force. And what a powerful nation building tool that would be,” she emphasized in the message, read by Dorret Aarons, NAJASO’s Executive Secretary.

Mrs. Harrison-Tomlinson said it was not by accident that the very important regional meeting was being held in New York and specifically at the Jamaican Consulate.

“It is quite right and timely and we have come full circle as it were, back to where the idea was conceived, in the east,” she noted.

She paid tribute to the many member organizations which continued their operations and successfully completed their individual projects during NAJASO’s off years and appealed for broad-based support for two new early childhood projects at Lilliput in St. James and Rose Hall in St. Catherine.

The President said that NAJASO continued to support the Marcus Garvey Scholarship Fund at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus.

It was announced at the meeting that NAJASO’s annual Convention would be held from July 11-15, 2007 at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort in Montego Bay, and the group was inviting nominations for its Lignum Vitae (Wood of life) Award, the association’s highest honour.

With a chapter in Bermuda, NAJASO is the largest Jamaican organization abroad. It aims to provide a vehicle for communication and co-operation between organizations and persons committed to the development of Jamaica.
