Montserrat hosts University of The West Indies’ 60th Anniversary Celebrations

BRADES, Montserrat – The island of Montserrat will host an extensive program of activities to commemorate the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) 60th anniversary. The events will be held from November 8 – 16, 2008 and serve as the culmination of year-long activities held on the island.

Visitors are encouraged to participate in the festivities that include a run UWI run road race, an around-the-island boat ride and an awards banquet.

The highlight of the week-long event will be the Country Conference on November 13 and 14. The theme of the two day conference is “Towards Sustainable Development in Montserrat: A Multi-Disciplinary Conference.” The keynote address will be delivered by one of Montserrat’s famous sons, Professor J.A. George Irish, executive director of the Caribbean Research Centre. Mr. Irish is also the Professor of Caribbean and Latin American Studies in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Medgar Evers College, City University of New York (CUNY).

Other high level presentations will also be made by scholars from the Caribbean, North America and the UK, covering subject matters including climate change, protection of the Caribbean Sea, investing in intellectual property, education and transportation planning.
