Miami’s Haitian American Pastors United for Greater Impact (HAPUGI) to Commemorate the One Year Anniversary of the Earthquake in Haiti

NORTH MIAMI – Wednesday, January 12, 2011, will mark the one year anniversary of the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake which struck Haiti and left the nation with an unprecedented 250,000+ casualties and millions more homeless and injured.

Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado, North Miami Mayor Andre D. Pierre Esq., along with the January 12th Taskforce Committee and the Haitian American Pastors United for Greater Impact, will hold a press conference on Monday, January 10, 2011 at 2:30 PM at the Little Haiti Park (Manno Sanon Stadium), 6301 NE 2 Avenue, in Miami, to announce several events planned to commemorate the anniversary of the tragedy.

The following events will be announced at the press conference:

The commemorative events will kick off on Tuesday, January 11th, with the “Veillée Patriotique” (Interfaith Service), hosted by the January 12th Taskforce Committee, at the Manno Sanon Stadium at Little Haiti Park, 6301 NE 2 Avenue, in Miami, from 7 PM – 12 AM. This event will feature a spiritual revival, personal accounts by victims, and powerful performances by various artists.

On January 12, 2011, a Haiti Earthquake Remembrance Vigil will be held in North Miami at the MOCA Plaza, 770 NE 125 Street, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. The event, hosted by North Miami Mayor Andre D. Pierre and the Haitian American Pastors United for Greater Impact, will feature an interfaith service and a moment of silence at 4:53 PM, the time of the earthquake’s impact. Across the plaza, the Museum of Contemporary Art will be open until 9 p.m. that evening. MOCA’s current exhibition features 150 extraordinary photographs and films of Miami’s Haitian community by celebrated photographer Bruce Weber taken over the last seven years.

Additionally, on that day, there will be a tri-county bike ride from West Palm Beach to North Miami to raise awareness and manpower to help rebuild Haiti. Later that evening, City of Miami Commissioner Richard P. Dunn II and the Little Haiti Cultural Center will host an evening of remembrance, at the Little Haiti Cultural Center, 260 NE 59 Terrace, in Miami from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. The event will feature live performances and the viewing of “Bound by Haiti”, a documentary by filmmakers who experienced the earthquake and its aftermath.
