Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones join World Vision to Encourage South Floridians to ‘Have a Heart for Haiti ’

MIAMI – The City of Miami and the international relief organization World Vision are once again coming together to raise funds to support rebuilding efforts in the island nation of Haiti following devastating storms in 2008.

On May 14, 2009, Mayor Manny Diaz and Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones will host “Have a Heart for Haiti ,” a special fundraising evening to benefit “Operation Hope for Haiti ”.

“Operation Hope for Haiti ” was created in response to the devastation left behind in Haiti after the country was hit by several hurricanes in 2008.

The partnership has mobilized various segments of the community to aid the cause. This fundraiser will benefit a project focusing on stemming the threat of flooding in rural Haiti by employing close to 1,000 local workers to install watershed walls, anti-erosion structures and conduct reforestation. The group hopes to raise $1.5 million over the next three years to help the community of Hinche , Haiti rebuild and recover.
