Miami Mayor and French Ambassador Launch Program for Haitian Children in Miami

MIAMI – Mayor Tomas Regalado and French Ambassador Pierre Vimont Launch Program for Haitian Children in Miami.

The French Heritage Language-Miami program consists of a series of creative and educational workshops in French language specially designed for 7 to 15-year-old children of the Haitian community and their parents. The Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance, the Consulate General of France in Miami, the Alliance Francaise, and the City of Miami collaborated in organizing the workshops.

Due to the recent earthquake, hundreds of Haitian families are expected to temporarily resettle in the United States and many children and teenagers face a damaging break in their education. The opportunity to maintain their skills in French is particularly important to these families, as education in Haiti is mostly conducted in French.

“I’m extremely grateful for the significant support of the French government and am confident that these collaborations will yield significant benefits for our Haitian community and city as a whole,” said Mayor Regalado. “Providing access to educational opportunities, including the learning of foreign languages, should always be one of our top priorities.”

These workshops are based on a previously established French Heritage Language Program, of the non-profit foundation FACE and a joint initiative of the French Embassy and the Alfred and Jane Ross Foundation.
