Miami International Airport named Cargo Airport of the Year

MIAMI – Miami International Airport was named Cargo Airport of the Year by Air Cargo News newspaper at the publication’s annual gala at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, England, on April 26. MIA was chosen from among the ten fastest growing airports worldwide that handle more than 500,000 tons of total cargo, according to data from Airport Council International (ACI), and for “investing and promoting its cargo activity to the best effect over the previous 12 months,” according to the publication.

The awards were decided exclusively by more than 19,000 votes from the air freight industry and are widely considered the most coveted prizes in air cargo, according to Air Cargo News. Air Cargo News is one of the world’s leading air freight publications and has been presenting the awards since its inception 25 years ago.

Other winners included the following airlines that provide cargo service at MIA: Cargolux, Best All-Cargo Airline; American Airlines, Best North American Cargo Airline; LAN Cargo – Best Latin American Cargo Airline; Swiss World Cargo, Best European Cargo Airline; and DHL Global Forwarding, Best New Freight Forwarder of the Year.

Cathay Pacific Airways, which announced in April that it will begin freighter service between Hong Kong and Miami this September, was named Best Asia Pacific Cargo Airline.

MIA, which handled 1.78 million tons of international freight in 2007, ranks first in the U.S. and ninth in the world in that category. MIA is also the only U.S. airport among the world’s top 10 in international freight.
