MIAMI – According to results released by Airports Council International (ACI) on Monday, Miami International Airport was the 10th busiest U.S. airport for passenger traffic in 2013, jumping two spots from the previous year. MIA served 40.5 million passengers in 2013 for a 2.8-percent increase over 2012’s total – the equivalent of one million more annual passengers through the gateway of the Americas. Nearly 830,000 of those additional passengers were international travelers, boosting MIA’s international traffic by 4.3 percent over 2012.
“The surge in passenger traffic and new airlines at MIA continues to be a good news story for our community, and I applaud this latest piece of encouraging news from Airports Council International,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.
The preliminary results also rank MIA 26th in the world for total passengers, up two spots from the 2012 rankings. While ACI notes that the final confirmed report to be published in summer 2013 will include any outstanding results from airports around the world, final results from all U.S. airports have already been included in the preliminary report. “Our strategy for aggressively attracting additional international carriers is paying dividends,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González. “With six new airlines already scheduled to start service at MIA this year, our ongoing discussions with about 10 more, and more routes to Brazil than any other U.S. airport for this summer’s World Cup, we expect our upward trend in passenger growth to be even stronger in 2014. Our rise in the rankings of busiest U.S. airports, largely a result of our booming international traffic, is more reason for the federal government to allocate MIA’s fair share of new Customs and Border Protection officers authorized this week.”
