Miami-Dade gets new soccer field

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jean Monestime, District 2 celebrates the opening of a new soccer field at Oak Grove Park on Saturday, January 28 at 1pm

MIAMI – Residents and soccer enthusiasts are invited to join Miami-Dade County District 2 Commissioner Jean Monestime and the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2012, as they open the new soccer field at Oak Grove Park, 690 NE 159 St., Miami.

“I am very pleased to have this opportunity to fulfill a commitment I made to the Oak Grove area residents,” said Commissioner Monestime. “This high quality soccer facility will motivate the children of the neighborhood to become more physically active and healthy, given this community’s passion for this sport.”

The new 195’ x 330’ regulation-size soccer playing field, complete with field goals, was sponsored by Commissioner Monestime and the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners, and is a product of Miami-Dade County Parks’ Design/Build Team. The project was funded by “Building Better Communities” General Obligation Bonds (GOB) totaling $235,000.

“Soccer is really popular at Oak Grove Park,” said Miami-Dade Parks Director Jack Kardys. “By identifying an under-utilized baseball field and repurposing it, we were able to create a cost effective solution that provides residents with a safe place to enjoy quality leisure and recreation time with their children and neighbors, as they play the sport that they love.”

The 22-acre Oak Grove Park also contains a five-acre lake, a three-acre hardwood hammock, four tennis courts, and a small recreation center. Future plans for this park include a domino shelter and additional walkway lighting.
